In Genesis 3, we get a glimpse of Lucifer, the one called Satan after his expulsion and fall from Heaven. Let’s read what Genesis 3:1 NIV says about him:
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
We know from the story that Eve gave thought to his question, and chose to disobey God by eating from the tree of life. Genesis 3:13 reveals how the blame game came into existence.
Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
God did not take Satan deceiving Eve lightly. What did God do? Satan, God’s once-anointed cherub in the mountain of God was cursed by Him and took on the form of a serpent. Genesis 3:14 confirms it:
So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.
Scriptures are found in the Bible that reveal Satan’s true nature and character. They also show his realm of authority here on the earth. When we know more about Satan, we will not be so easily fooled by him. Nine names are revealed in the Bible:
Adversary: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (I Peter 5:8)
Thief: The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy (John 10:10)
Murderer and Liar: You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. (John 8:44)
Accuser of the Brethren: for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. (Revelation 12:10)
Deceiver: So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; (Revelation 12:9)
Angel of light: For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. (2 Corinthians 11:14)
The prince of this world: Now is the judgment of this world; now shall the prince of this world be cast out. (John 12:31).
Prince of the power of the air: in which you once walked according to the]course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, (Ephesians 2:2)
The god of this world system: Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. (2 Corinthians 4:4)
Ephesians 4:27 says: “Don’t give the devil any room to defeat you.” I pray you have a greater understanding of Satan and how his many names reveal his true nature and character. I encourage you to read the Bible and discover the many names God has; they too will reveal His true nature and character. Through Him, Satan is defeated every time!
