What Does The Bible Say About Sleep?

Genesis 2:2 says, “On the seventh day He completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.”  It doesn’t say God slept, that He rested when His work was done. I love what is written in Psalm 121:4 “He who guards Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.” This tells us that God is wake at all times.  He has no need for sleep. Yet; when Jesus came to earth as a man, He both rested and slept. We read in Mark 4 that a storm arose at sea, and that Jesus was in the stern asleep on a pillow. He had a mortal body just as we do; and mortal bodies require rest and sleep. That’s the way God created human beings.

Sleep is so important and we function better when we have what our bodies require. Some people seem to function on very little sleep, but I’m not one of them.

The Bible covers everything we need to know about life; and that’s includes sleep. There’s beautiful scripture verses that talk about sleep. I like to incorporate some of these verses into my bedtime prayer. God’s promises regarding sleep gives me great comfort, and I pray they do for you as well. I’m taking these verses out of my Bible, the Modern English Version.

Psalm 3:5: I lay down and slept; I awoke for the Lord sustained me.

Psalm 4:8:  I will both lie down in peace and sleep; for You, Lord, make me dwell safely and securely.

Psalm 127:2: It is in vain for you to rise up early, and to stay up late, and to eat the bread of hard toil, for He gives sleep to His beloved.

I love the verses that help us let go of our concerns, so we can fall asleep.

Matthew 11:28: Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me. For I am meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.

John 14:27: Peace I leave with you. My peace I give you. Not as the world gives do I give you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Philippians 4:6: Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, my prayer and supplication with gratitude, make your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will protect your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

I Peter 5:7: Cast all your care upon Him, because He cares for you.

May God bless you with sweet sleep as you put your trust in Him.
